I didn't think it was possible but no snowfall overnight! Snow shovellers rejoice. One snowfall obesrver has reported that as of yesterday December has averaged 17.4cms/day.

The lucky ones who hiked the peak were greeted with sun and deep deep turns. The sun did affect the south faces so expect a thin layer of crust in those areas. Luckily when Niseko does see the sun it's usually not long enough to bake everything. There will still be some great powder pockets to be found all over the mountain. Good day for groomers or to explore Moiwa. The snow and wind is expected to pick up later toady so if you're planning on exploring the back country, you might want to get at it as early as possible.

Tomorrow we are expecting more snow, strong winds and general blizzard like conditions. After that it will be rather warm with temps hanging just above zero and scattered snowfall. All lifts are running today.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 305cm
Bottom - 175cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 260cm
Bottom - 170cm

Niseko Hanazono:
Top - 305cm
Bottom - 175cm

Top - 265cm
Bottom - 170cm

Niseko Avalanche info reads:

Niseko base 6am: -6C, no snowfall over the past 12 hours.

Coastal data: SSE5m/s wind at Benkei cape, 0.5m waves, 1018hPa at Kamui cape.

Annupuri peak wind: SE3m/s.

There are no new developments of snowdrifts, the snowpack is stable and the avalanche risk is low. Pre-low pressure system snowfall is forecasted to begin in the afternoon, which will potentially form a notable layer in the future snowpack (layer 12/28).

Most avalanche accidents happen during and just after storms. The next storm is approaching. The mountain condition is ever changing, pay attention to the coming snowfall transition.

Peak gates are scheduled to open at 9:30am. Respect the Niseko Rules and always use gates to step out of bounds. All ski resorts are deeply concerned about all visitors’ safety

Evening update:

After skiing today, there is a noticeably hard crust underneath some of the more powdery snow. Looks like some sun affect happened, but fear not! It looks we could get another nice blanket over the snow we currently have. The base is already ridiculous compared to last year as we have mentioned before.

With more snow coming before the end of December it is easy to say this could be one of the best early season months Hokkaido has ever seen. It doesn't look to change as low pressures are swirling around this magnificent winter wonderland.
