Well, the peak gates have opened for the first time this season, what more is there to say? Get boot packing and enjoy some super fresh tracks!

The snow is calming down for the next few days, the official word is that 10cm fell overnight on the hill. We observed at least that at village level. Skies should be clear for most of today, should be perfect conditions for the hike to the peak.

Tomorrow we are expecting more snow, watch this space for the latest on developments. For those interested, that official snowfall number for Kutchan town for the month of December currently stands at 337cm.

All lifts are running today and the whole of the Niseko area is waiting to be explored. If you are unsure of your knowledge/ability then it is always a good idea to go up with a guide or get yourself on an avalanche awareness course in town. Getting some local knowledge can turn a good day into an incredible unforgetable experience.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 305cm
Bottom - 175cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 260cm
Bottom - 170cm

Niseko Hanazono:
Top - 305cm
Bottom - 175cm

Top - 265cm

Niseko Avalanche info reads:

Niseko base 6am: -5℃, 10cm of crystal snow in the past 12hours, development of snowdrifts is minimal. Coastal data: WNW10m/s at Benkei cape, 1.9m waves & 1021hPa at Kamui cape. A moderate snowfall is persisting above 800m altitude, no drastic development of snowdrifts can be observed. The snow is stabilizing and the avalanche risk is relatively low. Peak gates 2 & 3 are scheduled to open today, respect the ski patrol’s instructions and use the gates to step out of bounds. All areas outside the gates is not controlled or managed by any means. It is strongly discouraged to easily follow others hikers and ride down from the peak if you are not experience and comfortable with the terrain orientation. Out of bounds riding involves many dangers and risks, if you decide to go out, you do it at your own risk.

The avalanche hazard at the Backbowl (around coordinate F6 on the Niseko Rules map) is higher than other areas at all times. Surface slab avalanches in midwinter are extremely devastating and runs at high speed. Refrain from traversing cornice slopes or resting at the bottom of the valleys. Have a nice day.
