Yesterday was a fine and sunny day but the wind really picked up as the day progressed and great plumes of snow could be seen streaming off the summit of Youtei. High cloud started moving in late in the day and overnight the winds intensified across the region. This morning firt thing I was somewhat surprised to see snow falling outside my house in Kutchan. It was quite wet and not settling but snow to such low levels so late in the season is pretty cool. By around 9:00am the snow had mostly changed to a sleet/rain mix down low but it's definitely settling further up on the mountain although the strong winds will be blowing it all over the place. The winds are strong enough that there is currently only one lift operating on the whole mountain being the beginner Ace #1 lift. All this weather is being caused by an approaching low pressure system from the west. It is slow moving and we will remain in a southerly airstream for the next day or so and temperatures will become milder with some rain expected right to the top of the mountain tomorrow. It will cool again a little after that and snow is expected about the peaks through to the weekend. Possibly there'll be some good backcountry turns up high when the weather fines up.
