Good morning from Niseko.

There were some lovely conditions to enjoy yesterday and indeed some deeper fresh snow up there on the top areas of the mountain. Nice.

I have been able to report some fresh snowfall at base in 13 of the previous 14 daily reports and in all of the last 7 reports, so it's a bit sad to not be able to report any this morning. And while the numbers were not huge in said reports - apart from two reports when I was able to report over 30cm (hurray!) - it has been great to have some consistency and some very nice conditions on the mountain. (Obviously). It's still clearly less than usual, but we certainly appear to be doing better than most other regions of Japan. I'll talk about that more in my season recap next Monday.

We ended up with blue skies yesterday and today we are again starting with a 'mostly cloudy with some blue sky' kind of situation. I reckon those clouds will disperse again and we'll get sunshine and mostly blue skies. That's just a guess of course.

It doesn't feel too windy (apparently it was overnight), so we should be all open this morning. Is it just my imagination, or are we having less wind issues this season? I'll have to look back and see if that is the case; feels like it.

There doesn't seem to be that much snow on the forecasts, perhaps a bit around Wednesday. So far this month I have observed 224cm of snowfall down here at base.

Can we have a bit more please? Yes, I know, I can't help being a bit greedy when it comes to snow.

And toast.

-----

From this morning the Ace Number 1 pair lift at Niseko Grand Hirafu is tagged as not operating - we can probably expect that lift to often be rested. I'll check each morning and update below as necessary so you might want to keep an eye on that.

-----

Someone sent in a mail to SnowJapan saying thanks for the reports and 'see you next November'.

Thanks for the thanks and I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed your time in Niseko.... but, I plan to be here posting reports every day until May. I'm not half way through yet!

Leaving me before then is a bit naughty and not part of our agreement, ok. ;)

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain Base: -6°, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: NNW 345 deg 9.1m/s, -7.3°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: NW 317deg 3.1m/s, -9.9°. Niseko Village Mizuno no Sawa 900m: N 343 deg 1.7m/s , -8.9° Hirafu 1000m: NNE 17 deg 5.2m/s, -10.0°. Hanazono 720m: NNW 342deg 5.0m/s, -7.1°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NNW8m/s. Kamui Cape N5m/s, 1026hPa, wave 1.9m. Annupuri 1000m: snow depth 160cm.

Above 800m a northerly wind up to 15m/s has continued to blow overnight. There is no obvious snowdrift development due to the small amount of snowfall. From observation and data, the general avalanche risk is low.

Above the treeline the snow surface is forming a crust in northern faces, but there is some good snow out there. Peak gates are expected to open in the morning. Be prepared before going out the gates. People keep falling into the creeks. It is very difficult to get out alone. Avoid riding alone.

Above 800m deep layers of depth hoar are increasing due to the lack of snow and cold temperatures. Caution is required on steep slopes in bowl like terrain such as Chisenupuri Naganuma area. If an avalanche occurs it will be of large scale. Have a good day.
