The latest Niseko Now report can be found here

It is another extremely cold morning here in Niseko (-10C). Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri resorts are this morning reporting temperatures on the mountain of -17C. Wrap up well!

Anyway, another 15-20cm more snowfall to report this morning in the village since yesterday as it just keeps on falling. Poor visibility out there this morning too.

I'm posting this report too early to give full details about lifts, but it looks like the top lift at Hanazono will be
taking a rest at least early this morning due to the windy conditions and the Annupuri Gondola is not yet open - Annupuri reporting wind speeds of up to 21m/s on the upper slopes. Check with the resorts for the latest as the weather conditions may well affect lift operations again today.

We might see a break in the snow tomorrow, and then even some sun amd milder conditions around Saturday before the snow is due to return early in the week.

Avalanche Information:

Niseko base: -10C, 30cm of crushed crystal snow, moderate snowdrift development and a weak snowstorm. Coastal data: WNW18m/s, 3.2m waves, 1017hPa. Moiwa 800m: W18m/s, -16C, bad visibility. Annupuri peak estimate: W20m/s, -25C.

Continued stormy weather as the winter weather pattern (high-pressure in the west & low in the east) persists. Development of cornices and snowdrifts are drastic in leeward slopes above 800m. Avalanche risk is extreme in Moiwa Mikaeri area, Osawa cornice area, Backbowl and open steep slopes, knolls and cornices area in Higashi-One. A large slide of up to 80-120cm from Dec 25th layer or triggered by the instability within the Dec 26-27th snowpack is to be highly considered today.

Many of the avalanche related accidents occur in leeward slopes with heavy load of drifted snow. Skiing stimulation can easily trigger a slide. Surface slab avalanches reach a very high speed (>100km/h) and are almost impossible to escape from. Think there may be someone below you that could be buried by an avalanche triggered by yourself. Avoid riding potential avalanche terrain and/or unnecessarily getting stuck in valley bottoms. Avalanches are common natural phenomena in Winter Mountains; it is not an accident as long as nobody is caught in it.

Gates 1, 2, 3, 4 & 6 will be closed today. Do not duck ropes to access the out of bounds area. The snow in the trees is a bit heavy due to strong wind, but in good condition.
