A very wild night last night with storm force winds whipping up blizzard conditions across the region. Not a huge amount of falling snow but coupled with all the blowing snow there has been a lot of drifting on the mountain. The avalanche report is advising drifts of around 1.2m have developed overnight on lee slopes. Such rapid deposition has created high avalanche danger around the resort and even if they do manage to get some higher lifts open today no gates will be opened.
This morning is still pretty wild and very cold. Currently only lower lifts are operating and all gondolas are on wind hold. You'd have to be pretty desperate to be braving conditions out there today. If you're heading up to mid mountain level make sure you really rug up as wind chill temps will be close to -30 degrees. The bottom lift at Hanazono is open and it's often a good spot to stay down within the trees on days like this.
A high moving across southern Japan will briefly swing the winds back more Westerly tomorrow and temperatures will moderate significantly. By later on Thursday though a strong low pressure system start directing cold Nth Westerlies over the region again which should persist through the rest of the outlook period.
