Yesterday remained mostly sunny and the clear skies continued through much of the night. This allowed the temperature to get down to -17 degrees in the valley in the very early hours of the morning. This morning though the winds and cloud have been increasing and temperatures rising quickly as the warm front approaches. Within the next hour or two the front should hit and we can expect quite a lot of snow to accompany it. The milder air behind the front is expected to push the temperature up to near freezing so it will not be the driest of snow at village level. For much of the next week we can expect snowfalls to continue but also temperatures remaining a little mild, getting up near or even slightly above freezing at the base most days.
Hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas. Got what you wanted from Santa and ate more than you should have. As well as skied powder in perfect sunshine like we got to in Niseko!

Avalanche Information:

Niseko Avalanche Info No.11

-9C, no new snowfall.
The Sea of Japan is calm with mild westerly wind and small wind chops.
There are no new development of snowdrift and no notable instability in the snow accumulation.
The avalanche risk is low today.
However, the weather will turn to a storm later today due to an approaching Low. Beware of the weather transitions. Most avalanche accidents happen during or just after storms.
Gate 5 (Hanazono) has opened yesterday, Gate 4 (Fujiwara) may open today depending on snow conditions.
The peak gates should open within a week.
One track left under the rope induces many people to do the same, and as a result, rises the possibility of accidents to happen.
The Niseko Rules are required to keep the freedom and the safety of out of bounds riding.
Trust the ski patrol’s instructions.
Today’s groomers condition is beautiful.
