An absolutely beautiful Christmas morning in Niseko. Currently mostly sunny although the clear skies did allow the temperature to plummet to near -18 in the valleys last night. Will be a great day up on the mountain with extensive views and this morning gate 7 in Annupuri will be opened so head over for some fresh turns. Can't think of a much better way to enjoy Christmas than deep powder turns in brilliant sunshine.
An approaching low from the West will see a warm front pass over Hokkaido tomorrow with strong winds, milder temperatures and what will be comparatively wet snow at village level. The clear skies last night has seen significant hoar frost development on open slopes which may become a weak layer in the weeks to come. Currently though avalanche danger is low. The resort is holding off on opening other gates currently because of concerns over obstacles buried just under the snow. Another good fall or two and we should be able to get pretty much all sidecountry terrain opened.
I'd like to wish all SJ people a very white and merry Christmas!

From today, as well as our normal Niseko Now reporting we will also be bringing you the latest Avalanche Information, courtesy of the Niseko Avalanche Institute. Please see below. Many thanks to Shinya-sama for making this happen.

Moiwa base 6am: -8℃, no overnight snowfall and clear sky.
Coastal wind: mild 5m/s NNE with 1.5m waves.
Today’s weather will probably form a notable surface hoar layer in some areas today.
Snowdrifts from yesterday are now stable and the general avalanche risk is low.
Beware of trees and losing control in offpiste terrains as yesterday’s tracks are not filled in.
The Mizuno no Sawa educational program is scheduled to start from next week.
Gate no.6 (Moiwa) and 7 (Ee-sawa) will open from the morning.
Still need one more dump to open the other gates.
Snow is still insufficient.
Be careful not to injure yourself and waste the season.
