Yesterday did fine up a little through the middle of the day but in the early evening it started to snow fairly heavily again with beautiful, big, fluffy flakes laying down another 10cm or so of quality powder. As forecast this morning has dawned clear and sunny with unobstructed views in all directions including all of Mt Youtei. Avalanche danger is rated as low so if you've ever wanted to get out and explore more of the mountain, today is definitely the day to do it. Remember the sunscreen as the sun is a lot more powerful now and reflected off the fresh powder it will definitely do some damage to unprotected skin. You really couldn't ask for a better Spring day to be on the mountain.
Snow is forecast to return later tomorrow and continue through the weekend.

Avalanche Information:
(Information as of this morning)

Niseko Avalanche Info No.99

Moiwa base 6am: -5℃, 10cm of fresh crystal snow and clear sky.
Coastal data: NW11m/s at Benkei cape, W7m/s, 1m waves and 1019hPa at Kamui cape.
Annupuri peak: WNW17.7m/s at 6am, strong wind (WtoNW14-17m/s) stagnated during the night.
The atmospheric pressure gradient is now gentle, but the moderate wind drifted snow above 1100m and newly formed slabs in knolls are still unstable this morning.
Overall avalanche risk is low.
The snow in the trees below 800m is good in the morning.
The weather of the Niseko range is closely related to the nearby Sea of Japan. If the wind picks up at Benkei cape, it will do the same in Niseko within 30min. If the wind involves snowfall, it would develop snowdrifts, and taking the fact that most accidents happen during storms into consideration, observing the snowdrift development is valuable to evaluate the degree of the risks. However, surface slab avalanches are obviously not the only dangers in winter mountains, cracks or full depth avalanche are other examples. The only way to avoid accident is to acknowledge the existing dangers and to avoid them. Never overestimate technology or personal abilities. Habituation hebetates your senses.
Blue bird day today, but always remember to objectively evaluate the potential dangers before you start your descent.
Peak gates will open at 9:30.
