Chinese New Year is happening here right now - fun times for lots of people and also meaning that Niseko is a bit crowded more than normal.

Some more snow overnight with the official numbers taking a bit of a jump up for Hirafu and Annupuri since Sunday. We are looking at intermittent snowfall today and heavier snowfalls in the Kokusai area. While it is sunny out now early on, the forecast has more clouds coming up and moving in on the area soon.

It doesn't look like it should be extremely windy today. Avalanche conditions are beginning to stabilize, but can still be hazardous in certain areas. Windloaded and north aspects are mainly the ones that are going to be the ones to watch. They are not planning on opening the gates early on, but it is possible later. I would expect they won't be open if the wind picks up and visibility falls, let see what the weather brings today.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu / Hanazono:
Top - 335cm
Bottom - 180cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 330cm
Bottom - 200cm

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -8℃, 10cm of mixed broken/crystal snow in the past 12 hours.
Coastal data: NW12m/s at Benkei cape, 1.1m waves and 1009hPa at Kamui cape.
Annpuri peak: NW13.9m/s and -17.5℃.
Snowfall transition: The Shakotan peninsula is blocking the snow clouds to come through to Niseko area. However, soft snowdrifts are developing in leeward slopes above 800m altitude, reaching up to 40cm thickness in some areas. The wind is picking up in higher altitude (>1000m) and snowdrifts are continuing to develop quite rapidly.
Hazard evaluation: Surface slab avalanche risk is rising in slopes with heavy wind-drifted snow deposit. 30cm thick slides are to be expected in those slopes. These slides have the characteristics to happen instantly and running down fast. The snow in the trees has been moderately reset, shallow but in good condition.
Gates opening: Peak gates 2 & 3 won’t open in the morning, possibly in the afternoon. Please respect the ski patrol’s decisions.
Cautions: Keep in mind that most avalanche-related accidents occur during poor weather. Knolls and slopes under cornices must not be cut sideways under any circumstances. Ski/ride one by one, watch your mate descend safely and then drop in. The temperature is low, beware of frostbites.
