It has been Groundhog Day for the last week. Twenty centimeters has fallen every 24 hour period with the sun coming out for short bursts. The problem is that the snow is so light that once packed down, it is not covering the best off-piste locations. At this rate it will be a while before the Summit and back bowls are open.

Even though the Niseko website stated that there was the same depth of snow at the top of the mountain as the day before, there was in fact 20 centimeters of light powder off the pizza box, single chair, otherwise known as King Chair 4. The Ace Chair 4 was the only lift not running as there are still so many bushes on the slope.

In spite the early season base, the skiing is fantastic. Fresh tracks between the trees and bushes are being had all over the mountain and the groomed is nice and soft. I skied from the top of King 4 to An’nupuri, down to Nigashiyama and back to Hirafu.

Conditions are same this morning as yesterday. The dalmatian pattern of highs and lows drifting eastwards over Hokkaido will continue these Groundhog Day conditions. This morning, there is light snow in the Village with more on top. Should be another good day just like yesterday.
