The snow expected last night was very brief adding only a light dusting at village level with maybe a bit more higher up. We've had a typical Spring freeze/thaw cycle going on over the last couple of days meaning icy, hard packed snow in the morning softening as the day progresses. Up high and in shaded areas there is also a crust which isn't all that pleasant. Luckily at least it looks like we are going to avoid the rain that is currently falling around central Honshu. Currently it is mostly overcast with reasonably strong winds out of the NW which has some of the upper lifts on hold. We can still expect a little snow tonight and over the coming days which will hopefully freshen up the slopes with a little softer powder.

Avalanche Information:

Peak gates are scheduled to open around 9:30am. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions before stepping out of the boundaries. Moiwa quad lift finished operation for this season and gate no.6 will not be managed anymore. The light overnight snowfall is likely to cause a shallow slide as the temperature rises during the day. Slow avalanche may spread in a large surface, beware of falls and slipdrops. The snow in low elevation trees is in good condition. The prediction of large-scale avalanche is very difficult as there are no notable signs/prognostics before it happens, more similar to glaciers avalanches. Potentially dangerous slopes are the ones without any cracks and with a heavy load of snow (especially around big cornices), such as 1100m Kozan no sawa (Backbowl), Osawa, west-face and Higashi-One. A massive scale avalanche can be triggered by the formation of a crack, drastic rise/fall of temperature and rain. A deep layer avalanche could also lead to a full-depth avalanche. Stay alert and think of what could be coming from behind, especially in natural half-pipe terrains. Cornices can suddenly collapse, keep enough distance from cornices (>30m) when you ride or take a break. Annupuri peak 6am: NW16.7m/s, -11℃. Annupuri base: -3℃. Coastal data: NNW10m/s. Enjoy the spring conditions.
