Got back to the Niseko area just a little while ago and it looks like I missed a glorious, mostly sunny day. Yesterday we had good snowfalls through much of the day but the wind up high remained strong. There was around another 15cm of snow since last report and due to the winds a lot more drifting onto lee slopes up higher. With the new snow and moderating winds it would have been a very nice day up on the mountain today. As I came past Mt Youtei quite a few line could be seen from people who'd taken advantage of the clear skies and did the climb up.
An approaching low pressure system will see conditions deteriorate tomorrow and winds strengthen later in the day with reasonable amounts of snow to fall tomorrow night into Tuesday.
Currently still looking like mild temps and rain likely on Thursday but hopefully turning back to snow on Friday.

Avalanche Information:

Niseko Avalanche Info No.68

Moiwa base 6am: -7℃, mild breeze with 15cm of overnight snowfall.
Coastal data: NW7m/s at Benkei cape, N3m/s, 1.6m waves and 1020hPa at Kamui cape.
Annupuri peak 6am: NW9.2m/s, -13℃.
Strong gusts have persisted during the night, topping NW45.2m/s at 20:00.
Snowdrift developments are drastic, max 120cm in leeward ridgeline above 1000m.
The stabilization of these deep and heavy slabs is slow. Considerable avalanche hazards (60cm or greater) are present in Higashi-One steep slopes, upper Backbowl, Osawa cornice slopes and Mikaeri no sawa knoll area.
Potential trigger layer is Feb 19th or the weak lines within the snowdrifts.
Surface slab slides occur suddenly and a wide surface collapses simultaneously. The running speed is also very fast, mostly impossible to escape.
Peak gates are scheduled to open at 10:30, however keep in mind that the avalanche risk is high today.
Avoid wide-open slopes with wind-ripples and steep slopes, especially near knolls and cornices.
The snow in the tree below 800m is starting to stabilize.
Avalanches do happen, be conscious.
Better not overestimate technology and knowledge.
