Considering the forecast for today I was expecting it to be wet and miserable and first thing this morning I could hear light rain on my roof down in Kutchan. As I left for work though the rain was turning to sleet/wet snow and by the time I got to Hirafu heavy snow was falling. It's still a little above freezing at the base but I'll take heavy, wet snow over rain any day. This is exactly the sort of fall we need to pack down the sasa and all the new snow over the last week.
Things still looking good for a big system to hit Christmas Eve and Santa's sack should be overflowing with powder when he arrives!

Avalanche Report

Moiwa base: +3℃, wet snowfall from predawn. Warm airflow due to approaching Low-pressure system.
Coastal data: SSW8m/s at Benkei cape, S10m/s, 1.4m waves at Kamui cape.
The wind is forecasted to swing to WNW15m/s at 1000m at noon.
It would then swing NW in the afternoon and wet snow would fall above 800m.
Snowdrifts will start developing on top of 12/19 layer (pre-low snowfall) in areas above 700m.
Heavy loads of wet snow will lead to dangerous slabs forming in 30°slopes around cornices, cliffs and under lift lines.
Most avalanche related accidents occurs during bad weather.
Risks are especially high in knolls and cornice slopes.
Better take it easy and remain in safe areas today.
The conditions will turn better soon.
