Wow, what a wild night! And I'm not talking about the New Year celebrations. The blizzard hit full force last night dropping 50-60cm of snow and whipping it around into massive drifts that have blocked driveways, covered cars and just generally caused havoc including the cancellation of many of the New Year celebrations that had been planned.
This morning there's still been heavy snow falling but the winds have dropped back a bit. The mountain will have been totally resculpted overnight with some areas stripped back to an icy base and others completely filling in. Obviously there will have been substantial cornice development and loading of lee slopes and the avalanche danger is currently extreme. Don't duck ropes and definitely don't head backcountry.

Today should see the winds re-intensify and more heavy snow and blizzard like conditions through tonight and tomorrow. If you're heading up today make sure you really rug up as there's some very cold wind chills.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 205cm
Bottom - 105cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 210cm
Bottom - 130cm

Top - 200cm
Bottom - 140cm

Avalanche Information:

Niseko Avalanche Info No.17

Moiwa base -5℃, stormy, 50cm of mostly hail in the last 12hours.
Coastal wind: WNW 19m/s with 4.3m waves.
Wind at top of Mizuno no sawa: 20m/s NW with 65cm new snow accumulation.
Predicted wind at noon at Annupuri peak: 30m/s NNW.
Snowdrifts are drastically developing due to this westerly storm. They are still unstable and vulnerable to stimulation.
Extreme avalanche risk in all mountain areas.
Predicted trigger layer is the pre-Low snowfall layer (31st Dec), and slabs of up to 80cm could slide at anytime. Major scale slides could occur in knolls and steep terrain.
Gates opening are still undecided and top lifts will be kept closed. Please respect the ski patrol’s decisions.
NEVER duck ropes to step out of bounds, better stay within the course today. Peak gates will open once this storm has passed.
Happy New Year!
