Good morning.

Another mostly cloud and cold start to the day here in Niseko. There is actually some light snow falling in places, though it's not the kind that is going to build up into new cm.

I am assigning the 'light snow' image to the report in the table able - if there was a 'very light snow in places' icon, I'd use that!

If these clouds clear up again - possible, there are some hints of blue sky - we might be able to enjoy some more sunshine again today. So it's a bit of a mixed early morning and one of those times when it feels like my report might be out of date within the hour.

(Proper) snowfall is due from sometime either late tonight or early tomorrow, and it looks like we might be on for a run of a few days of fresh. Hurray! How many cm will we get, I wonder. I will tell you each morning.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain Base 6.00am: -6°, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: 0.3m/s 68 deg ENE, -7.4°, trace new snow. Hirafu 1000m: 0.9m/s 57deg ENE, -8.7°. Hanazono 720m: 1.4m/s 154 deg SSE, -6.7°. Niseko Village Mizuno n Sawa 900m: 0.8m/s 281 deg WNW, -8.6° Coastal data: Benkei Cape:WSW3m/s. Kamui Cape SW7m/s, 1016hPa, wave 0.7m. Annupuri 1000m: Snow depth 140cm. Annupuri 1100m: no data.

There has been no new snow and many tracks from yesterday can be seen on Annupuri and the surrounding mountains. More than 1000 people passed through the upper gates yesterday and happily there were no accidents reported. There were no accident reports on the surrounding mountains either. Moiwa Gate 10 will be closed from today, the Mikaeri Forest road which connects to Moiwa is not a ski run. Be careful riding not to fall off the course or hit trees.

From data and observation the overall avalanche risk is low. However around Haru no Taki knoll the surface has melted from solar radiation and a slab formed (dependent on slope direction and topography) and the avalanche risk is higher. Do not enter strictly off limits areas. The snow is a bit hard today but good. Powder isn't everything, take the chance to improve your skills. Have a good day.
