Good morning from Niseko and it is a fine start to the day here.

Not in terms of loads of snow (0cm); rather, fine and sunny. (Doh!)

Quickly going back to yesterday and it was windy out there with some of the higher lifts remaining affected and limited action available on the mountain. Happily this morning it's much calmer and the lifts that are planned to be moving should be doing so from the start of the day.

So this morning the sun is out and there are blue skies all around. It's quite cold early on but will be warming up during the daytime over the next few days.

We were expecting a mild period of course, but it still doesn't make it any easier to accept. The consolation is that compared to other regions of Japan that are really looking like they will warm up quite considerably over the next few days, it's relative and for us it's not going to be threatening the snow base - and we should be enjoying a return to more seasonally appropriate temperatures by late week.

I wouldn't expect much fresh snow until Friday though.

Many of you may have seen this on Saturday when I first posted it but it seems that a few naughty folk don't read my reports over the weekend, so forgive me for re-posting the following bit of information. I think it's really interesting and so I want as many people who enjoy these reports to know about it:

From last week, SnowJapan.com started daily updates of the official snow depth data for well over 300 ski and snowboard resorts around Japan.

It’s (very) important to point out that this data is not something that SnowJapan is creating – rather, it is the official snow depth numbers that ski resorts themselves are reporting every day.

If you look through the data and charts for different ski resorts, you will notice how of them seem to change their numbers daily; others seem to only change them every so often (even if it has snowed in the meantime); while others have their own little quirks! Some report the snow depth at top; some report the snow depth at base. Basically, even more so than my ‘observed snowfall’ measurements each day, remember that this is not a ‘science’ and this data should just be looked at as something of interest.

What I find most interesting about these statistics is comparing the numbers for different seasons, especially as each resort will (presumably) be taking measurements from the same place every season. And now, this comparison can very easily be done!

Here's how. Click on the big blue tab called ‘Snowfall Analysis’ at the top of this report – and then go down to the last chart on the page. In the case of these Niseko Now reports, the data from the Niseko Grand Hirafu resort area is used. As you may notice, a new ‘point’ on the graph is going to be added every day of the season, so it is should be fun watching how the shape of the line progresses this season compared with the previous two seasons.

And just to be clear, you can see this chart – and the associated data - for hundreds of ski resorts throughout Japan. Where? On the ‘Snowfall’ tab on each of the ski resort pages within SnowJapan.com. Here are direct links to a few of them:

Niseko Grand Hirafu
Niseko Village
Niseko Annupuri Kokusai

I hope you are enjoying all of this new data-watching as much as I am. I find myself checking out all the Now reports every day, even if (unfortunately) I’m not going to be going to those places anytime soon!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -4℃, no snowfall and calm morning. Coastal data Kamui cape: W6m/s, 1021hPa, 1.8m.

Moiwa 850m: -4℃, mild wind and no snowfall.

The isobars have spread wide and made the wind calm down. The snowdrifts that developed with yesterday's strong wind are now stabilizing. Some of those snowdrifts have developed up to 120cm on top of Dec 14th layer at 800m elevation.

There were no instability observed while pressure testing and looking at the weather transition and other data, the general avalanche risk is relatively low. The snow in the out of bounds areas is deep and heavy.

Bushes and streams aren't buried and hard to boot pack out if caught inside. Gates are not ready yet as conditions are not good enough to let people out of bounds. Ducking ropes is prohibited, stay within the resort boundaries.

Temperature is forecasted to rise today. Sun-affected heavy slabs will form at the surface of the south-facing 40+° steep slopes and the layer above Dec 14th will become likely to slide. Be aware and be prudent.

Gates will start to open as the snowpack builds up and ski patrollers will make the call when ready. Please wait for a little while. This report is issued for the sake of all resort users. Please respect the Niseko Rules.
