It has been a while since I have started a report with this but... no new snowfall to report this morning from the Niseko area. Bit of a shocker. It was way back before Christmas before I posted that in a report. You can check all of the snowfall depths towards the bottom of the reports if you didn't know. It makes for an interesting read.

So anyway yesterday the sun was out and we have beautiful blue skies. It really was a fantastic day though without that topup that we are so used to runs did end up rather tracked out. Like I said in another recent report, the regular snowfalls we get sure help with those refreshes.

Onto today. Clouds have moved in this morning and there's much more of a duller look to things now. It's not snowing at the moment but snow is forecast for later on - this afternoon? - and then overnight into tomorrrow so I hope we will be able to bring news of that to you tomorrow.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Niseko base 6am: -11C, no overnight snowfall, calm morning. Moiwa 800m: -11C, no snowfall. Annupuri 1150m: W5m/s, -13C, no snowfall. Hirafu 1000m: -11C, no snowfall. Peak 1308m: WSW4.9m/s, -14.1C. Wind forecast at noon: N10m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape S4m/s, Kamui cape SSW7m/s, 0.9m, 1017hPa.

The mountain is calm, no snowfall in the past 12 hours and slight displacement of snow. The snow is tracked out around the resorts, please do not duck ropes or enter strictly off-limits areas to seek fresh snow. So many traverse lines has been traced in the Backbowl’s sidewalls again yesterday. Cutting across under cornices can easily trigger slab avalanches, and in the overcrowded situation in Niseko, everybody should refrain from traversing the upper slopes for the sake of the people at the bottom. If this style of skiing becomes ordinary, it will eventually end up in a serious accident. Cracks are opening up in various places and are hard to see from above. Keep that in mind and ride carefully. Cornices have grown big and can collapse suddenly. A large chunk of cornice can easily kill a person. Many hazards are present in the mountain, but accidents can be avoided if everyone is cautious. Peak gates will open from the morning, ask the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out. Beware of sudden weather changes.
