Good morning from Niseko.

Well after the fine sunny weather over the weekend this morning it is much duller and unfortunately... rain. Boooo!

(Though it has apparently been snowing higher up, which is good to hear).

Looks like top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are on hold - windy up there? Lift operations as per list below as of 8:30am.

The good news is that tomorrow will be colder and we should be getting back into consistent snowfall. Hurray!

I'm going to have a relaxing day. Starting in about 10 minutes with some toast.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Coastal Data 6:25am. Cape Benkei:S5m/s. Cape Kamui: ENE3m/s, 1009hPa, wave1.0m. Hanazono 1000m: -1.9℃, S8.6m/s. Hanazono 720: 0.3℃, SSW5.3m/s. Moiwa 800m: -0.2℃, S2.9m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -2.1℃, SSW1.9m/s. Yu no Sawa 1100m: -2.0℃, SW4.2m/s. Mizuno no Sawa Top: -1.2℃, SSW3.4m/s. Kutchan Town:1.4℃, E4.1m/s, snow depth 173cm, 1009.5hPa. Moiwa base: -1, light wind, rain.

Rain up to 600m due to the warm air flowing in, from 3am snow started falling above 700m, with 15cm falling around 800m of wet, large crystal low pressure snowfall. The avalanche risk is low this morning, however under lift lines and other steep cliffy slopes be careful of surface avalanches. They will travel slowly but if buried they are very dangerous. Below 700m rain will penetrate deeply into the snowpack through cracks making full depth avalanches more likely. At higher elevations the warm air will open more cracks, also increasing the risk of full depth avalanches. Total snowfall in Kutchan is now at 740cm, 100cm more than average. Snow drift depth on leeward slopes around 800m is over 8m in some places and the risk of full depth avalanches increasing as the time goes on.

A large avalanche from 1100m in Kozan no Sawa or Osawa will clear out the valley, change the terrain and run all the way down to the Annupuri water source. Stay out of the valley bottoms, you can't escape the avalanche. Wind and snow will intensify tomorrow and the avalanche risk will rise sharply. Accidents often occur during bad weather. Pay attention to the snowfall profile. Gate opening today is undecided, please respect the patrols decision. Creek water will rise with the melting snow, be careful of snow bridges collapsing. A Feb15th layer will be expected in the snowpack.
