Yesterday remained fine and sunny throughout the day and temperatures got up to a mild 5 degrees in the village. Overnight a low pressure system approached the NW of Hokkaido and a warm front passed over the region bringing some light rain over the resort. This morning though it has turned back to snow and it is heavy enough that it is starting to settle in the village. The current precipitation is expected to move through by the early afternoon. We should see snow develop again later tomorrow and continue through to the weekend.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 420
Bottom - 200

Niseko Village:
Top - 390
Bottom - 190

Top - 410
Bottom - 200

Avalanche Information:

The opening of the gates is yet to be decided and is subject to the lift operation / weather conditions. Please follow the ski patrol's instructions. No overnight snowfall and rain started to fall at base level from early morning. The temperature remained above freezing level at the base throughout the night. A strong westerly wind was stagnating in higher elevation, however its direction has been unstable since pre-dawn. Annupuri peak 6am: average wind 4.7m / s, -2 ℃. The snow surface is becoming wet & heavy due to the warm temperature and rain, beware of wet slab avalanches in steep terrain (> 30 °). Bigger slides from deeper layers are also to be highly considered as the specific weight of the surface increases and stimulates the weak layer (1cm thick layer including facets from Mar 8th) present 60-70cm under the surface. There has been many avalanches occurring from this layer in the past few days. It is highly probable that the instability level will rise as the snow surface weight & consistency increases. Be especially careful in sun-affected south facing deep gully terrain and carefully follow the coming weather.
