Last night saw a pretty good amount of snow. It was a bit windy and the snow came down heavy in a short period. I cut a few cornices yesterday and they came down really easy. Granted, it is largely just surface slab, there was a high amount of windloading. If you are going to go into the backcountry you will want to be aware of the aspect you are skiing and try to stick to more southward objects. The leeward slopes will have quite a bit of slab built on top of it.

With that said, yesterday was D-E-E-P in the Niseko area. The resort itself was fairly tracked but I heard people who have been coming here for years say it was their "best day ever on snow".

The forecast is extremely hard to predict but it looks like intermittent snow mixed with patches of sunlight and a whole array of different weather conditions. It's a good day to get out and enjoy the wind-favored snow in resort. Should be an awesome one out there!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -10C;, 20cm of broken particles snow in the past 12 hours.
Coastal data: NW16m/s at Benkei cape, 2.3m waves and 1009hPa at Kamui cape.
Annupuri peak wind: NW24.8m/s.
Snowfall transition: The storm has now persisted for 24hours and the development of snowdrifts are inconsistent. A notable Jan 13th layer has been formed as the low-pressure system passed and the following strong northwesterly wind inflowing cold air mass has made new snowdrifts to grow on top of it.
Current status: Snowdrifts and cornices development is drastic and are very unstable, especially in leeward slopes above 1000m.
Risk evaluation: Surface slab avalanche hazard up to 80cm thick is to be highly considered in the following areas. Coordinate C4 Moiwa area, Mikaeri bowl area, F5 O-sawa area, all Backbowl area and east of G7 all Higashi-One area.
Gates opening: Peak gates will be closed and other gates are subject to chair-lift operations.

Many of the avalanche related accidents have been reported during and just after storms. In conditions like todays, it is strongly advised to stay away from leeward slopes or slopes with cornices above. The visibility is bad, be careful not to loose track. Beware of frostbites. Do not duck ropes to seek fresh tracks, we highly recommend to remain inbounds today.

Evening update:

Today saw a decent amount of snow but lots in Kiroro and surrounding Niseko areas. It will be a bit on the colder side tomorrow and snowing intermittently to heavy at times. Wind could be a factor but it isn't certain at this point. Tonight will be an awesome one for a night ride, but bundle up!
