Good morning from Niseko.

This spring-like blip (surely a blip) continues today with the warm conditions set to continue after a chilly overnight.

Today it will be bright and sunny, perhaps in a somewhat hazy kind of way.

Tomorrow there's a real chance of rain.

But beyond that it should be getting colder again and we should be getting snow.

You may have heard about the large earthquake off the coast of Tohoku, to our south, last night. I had just fallen asleep, only to be rudely woken by it. Nothing major here, though I find myself very sensitive to these (nasty) things. It didn't cause any physical damage here, but note what the Avalanche Report says below...

Niseko Avalanche Report

Coastal Data 6:25am. Cape Benkei:SSE3m/s. Cape Kamui: S11m/s, 1019hPa, wave0.9m. Hanazono 1000m: -0.8℃, WSW1.6m/s. Hanazono 720: -1.6℃, SSE0.5m/s. Moiwa 800m: -0.0℃, ESE1.5m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -2.5℃, WNW4.3m/s. Yu no Sawa 1100m: -2.7℃, WNW2.7m/s. Mizuno no Sawa Top: -2.2℃, WNW2.8m/s. Kutchan Town:-10℃, radiant cooling, NNE0.3m/s, snow depth 177cm, 1021.8hPa. Moiwa base: -4, light wind, sunny, no new snow.

The atmospheric pressure gradient is shallow, there is no new snow and sunny with light winds. Yesterday’s tracks remain like a net over the mountain. They are hard and you can easily catch an edge on them. Be careful. Due to the earthquake last night the possibility of a full depth avalanche is increasing on south facing areas like strictly off limits Haru no Taki. Be careful near these types of slopes. Do not duck ropes looking for fresh snow. There is the possibility of large scale full depth avalanches, all the way down to the bamboo, on West Ridge Goshiki side around 1000m. Avalanches have run all the way down to the guard rails on the road in the past. Although there is little fresh snow left, the weather is good. Please listen to the patrol and be prepared before going out of bounds, always using the gates. Please respect Niseko Rules. There are ice cookies on the groomers at some elevations but snow is generally good. Helmets strongly recommended. Is your beacon on? Have a good day.
