Yesterday the morning snowfall cleared to a fine afternoon making turns in the fresh powder all the more enjoyable with views to Mt Yotei and beyond. With not a breath of wind and clear skies the temperature plummeted to -21 last night in Kutchan. In the early hours of this morning though the snow has returned and it is currently snowing heavily again.

A little update on the snowfall back on the 11th. Found out that we actually received about a metre of snow that day making it the heaviest single day snowfall in the last 10 years. No wonder the snow clearers couldn't keep up!

Just a word on why my reported snowdepth varies somewhat from the official snowdepth. I know in most ski resorts in the world the main problem is that official depths are often misleading in that they overstate things. In Niseko I get the feeling they do the opposite. Just this last week we had close to 2.0m of snow fall and this was on top of a 1.4m base. Now even allowing for a fair amount of compaction the official depth of only 1.75m seems unlikely. The official depth may be a reasonable indicator of the depth on piste where there is a lot of compaction but I believe my reported snowdepth is a better indicator of the off-piste depth.
