Yesterday remained fine and there's been no new snow. All forecasts are now pretty much in agreement that we'll be getting reasonable amounts of rain later today and through tonight. A warm front will move up through the region on the eastern flank of a large low pressure system approaching from the west. Mild air and heavy precipitation will follow in the wake of the front. Later tomorrow as the center of the low begins to move to the east of us cooler air will start feeding back over the region and the rain will turn back to snow. The low pressure system will then track NE and strengthen in the Sea of Okhotsk and give us a good week or more of cold northwesterlies and snowfalls. So although this next 24 hours or so will suck big time there's definitely some good times ahead.
Unless they're somewhat crazy I'll assume most people won't want to ski in the rain and will be looking for alternatives. There's plenty of great onsens in the region and there's little better to rejuvenate all those tired muscles. You could head down to Kutchan and check out the Natural History Museum or try a meal at one of the plethora of restaurants in town. You could also head a little further afield and check out Otaru or Sapporo, both an easy train ride away. Try not to get too depressed when the rain really hits, remember there's plenty of snow on the way all next week!
