Good morning from Niseko.

No fresh cm to report to you this morning but as I write the report this morning it is snowing and there is a light dusting just outside my place. We're not expecting much but... come on!!

Today is the middle day of the long weekend. All lifts apart from the top Jumbo lift and Country Road are go.

-----

After directing you to the Hakuba Now report yesterday and the comments my colleague made over there (I recommend you have a read if you haven't yet), I spent a bit of time reading through the other daily reports.

The way this season has gone so far in most areas of Japan really is quite worrying. I'm not well up on all the scientific side of things (please don't snigger!), but I truly hope that it can turn round and Japan gets something more like expected levels of snow soon. There does seem to be a lot of 'I've never seen as little snow' talk going on...

Up here in Niseko we are doing relatively well - we may not be having a 'classic' so far, but there is plenty of fun to be had. And perhaps we should remember that we are doing better than other areas when grumbling about the relative low levels.

I am determined to simply try and appreciate the snow more... perhaps it has been taken a bit too much for granted.

Just to elaborate on one comment in the below avalanche report: 'the bamboo leaves are still looking pretty genki'.

'Genki' is a commonly used phrase in Japanese that kind of translates as being lively or fine.

So, in mid January, not only do we not want to be seeing bamboo leaves and other vegetation on the mountain, but we certainly don't want it to be looking genki. (Not that I want it to be feeling bad as such, it deserves a good rest until spring).

Let's hope we don't start hearing about sakura cherry blossoms on the news soon! That sort of news is just fine in April please.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain Base 6.00am: -3°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -6.4°, NE3.8m/s 318 deg NW. Hirafu 1000m: 2.2m/s 253 deg WSW, -8.3°. Hanazono 720m: 2.4m/s 346 deg NNW, -8.3°. Annupuri 1000m: snow depth 135cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNW8m/s. Kamui Cape W8m/s, 1011hPa, wave 0.8m.

There is no new fall or any snowdrift development. The general avalanche risk is low. The are no significant remarks.

There is still less than 1m of snow at 400m and the bamboo leaves are still looking pretty genki. It seems the normal West High/ East Low weather systems have forgotten Niseko this year.

Snow on the groomers is thin and hard. The groomer drivers are having a hard time with the lack of snow. Be careful driving between the resorts, the roads are slippery. Do not duck ropes to leave resorts. Main gates are expected to be open today. Take care.
