Good morning all. And how are you doing.

It is an easy report for me today, and I'm posting early so I can get outside. Hope you don't mind!

The sun is out, blue skies above, calm. And just a dusting of snow (but not enough for me to contemplate 'rounding up'!) The lifts should all be open as normal and we're expecting gates to be open.

Toast eaten. Check. Gear ready. Check!

I hope you all have a good day wherever you are.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6.00am: -5°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -7.4°, W2.3m/s, no new snow or snowdrift development, good visibility. Annupuri 1150m: -10°, light winds, trace new snow. Hirafu peak: -10°, light winds, trace new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: SW2m/s. Kamui Cape: light winds, 1020hPa, wave 0.7m.

The sea and mountains are both calm, there is little atmospheric pressure gradient and there has been almost no snowfall in the last 12 hours. From observation the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and prepare accordingly before going out the gates. Beacons and helmets are not mandatory but are recommended. Cracks are increasing everywhere. They cannot be seen from above and are very deep this year. Avoid riding on cracked slopes.

From this winters snowfall trend the risk of full depth avalanches is getting high in Kozan no Sawa and Osawa. When deep snowdrifts fracture down to the ground they release a huge amount of snow into an avalanche, running at high speed down to and along the valley bottom for long distances, pulling out boulders and trees, leaving devastation in their path. Its easy to ride out the valley bottoms, but should be avoided.

This information is published for the safety of resort users who want to ride out of bounds. Locals are always on the lookout for everyone’s safety. The deep fresh snow has finished this year, but spring skiing is still fun. Have a good day.
