Sorry about the late report but at least today there's some very good stuff to report about!
I know I'd suggested that there was little snow forecast over this weekend and we'd have to wait until around Tuesday for a return of good conditions but thankfully I was very, very wrong. Yesterday the light snowfalls in the morning intensified throughout the afternoon and into the evening leaving a good 40cm+ of blower pow on the surface by morning. First thing this morning the sun was shining bright down in Kutchan but the mountain was still wreathed in cloud and snowing. The snowfalls continued throughout much of the day but have eased a little this afternoon. Still I'd say another 15cm or so fell since this morning.
I did a couple of warm up runs first thing this morning in Strawberry Fields and Blueberry's and the snow was reaching to just over knee deep with the hard base below only just noticeable. I then went high and out through Gate 4 into Fujiwara no Sawa bowl and easily found fresh tracks and bottomless turns in up to waist deep, very light powder. Without doubt some of the best turns I've had this season so far. I met a couple of Norwegian guys on the cat track at the bottom and they declared it was the deepest snow they had ever skied and the trip half way around the world was worth it just for today. Also met some guys who'd come off the peak who said near the top they were sinking almost up to their armpits. Possibly they were exaggerating a little but I intend to find out for myself tomorrow!
A bit more snow should come through tonight and tomorrow and then later on Tuesday and then for the rest of the outlook further heavy snowfalls and cold temperatures are expected. Looks like it's going to be an awesome week ahead.

Avalanche Information:

Niseko Avalanche Info No.26

Moiwa base 6am: -6℃, 40cm of fresh crystal snowfall in the last 12 hours.
Coastal data: 6m/s NW at Benkei cape, 8m/s N, 2.2m waves and 1013hp at Kamui cape.
The atmospheric pressure gradient is moderate and the Sea of Japan is relatively calm.
4.6m/s NNW wind is blowing at the peak at 6am and predicted to remain within 10m/s westerly at noon.
The snow is deep along the ridgelines.
All aspects show no notable signs of avalanche hazard. The general avalanche risk is low and the snow is good.
However, some soft slabs have developed in SE facing slopes above 1000m. Surface slab slides of 50cm deep, 40m large, flowing for 100-300m with 100-120km/h speed are still to be considered in those specific slope conditions.
Do not underestimate the risk involved in riding steep open faces such as the Backbowl’s sidewalls or the Eastern ridge (Higashi-One) cornice slopes.
Peak gates will open at 10:00am.
Choose your route carefully as the visibility is poor.
Be also aware that it is Sunday, and many people are riding below your line.
Always mind of the risks of avalanches before you start riding.
Have a nice day.
