Heavy snow (for them - the most they have had in a long time) caused havoc in some areas of Honshu including Tokyo yesterday. They just aren't used to it and while we of course love snow as much as is possible, it's much less welcome down there. While I'm sure it was fun for some who are not used to it, lots of accidents, power cuts and transportation problems were reported; which of course is not good at all. No doubt it will have messed up some plans for people coming up to Hokkaido as well. Hopefully that will fix itself out today quickly.

So with all that snow down there, how much snow did we get here in Niseko?

None!

Yes, there's no snowfall to report this morning from the region. It's still very cold, just no fresh snow. And after a Saturday so with no refresh expect it to be tracked out.

It's a cloudy/overcast morning here at the moment. We are hoping to see snow start to fall sometime this afternoon.

Tuesday is a national holiday in Japan and so expect more locals out on the mountain that day, though it won't affect the number of overseas visitors. The peak of the Chinese New Year holidays is now of course behind us but there are many people in the region here to enjoy the Sapporo Snow Festival at the moment.... as well as the Niseko powder of course. (So, powder refresh please!)

Until tomorrow!

Niseko Avalanche Report

Niseko base 6am: -10C, no new snow in last 12 hrs. Moiwa 800m: -12C, light winds, no new snow. Annupuri 1150m: -12C, calm. Hirafu 1000m: -12C, calm, no new snow. Annupuri peak 1308m: -15.2C, light winds. Cape Benkei:, Cape Kamui: no data available.

Currently we are under the influence of high pressure system resulting in light winds and no new snow. The snow pack is generally stable and avalanche risk is low. However take care crashing into trees and falling into cracks. The mountain is tracked out but snow is still good.

Do not be tempted to duck the ropes to enter strictly prohibited areas - Haru no Taki, Mizuni no Sawa, or Yu no Sawa. If you want to ride outside the ski areas, leaving from the ski areas, you MUST leave through one of the gates. Accomodation providers in the Niseko area have a duty and responsibility to convey this correct information to their guests. Anybody who ducks ropes, regardless of nationality, will have their passes confiscated.

All gates are expected to open this morning. Please listen to the patrols advice before leaving. Take care, outside the gates is not the ski area and is not patrolled.
