There was about 5cm of snowfall around the Niseko area last night. We are expecting it to snow pretty heavily over the next couple days. It's not looking like a major storm system, but it will be enough to get some real good turns in. It should be on and off all day over the next few days. It looks like it will stay relatively cool this week so it won't turn out to be as warm as yesterday. There will be periods of heavy snowfall and other periods of sun. It will be a roller coaster of weather! The winds should be between minimal and moderate at times, being moderate usually later in the afternoon.

There wasn't any significant wind loading last night, but it is important to consider the warm day layer from a couple weeks ago and yesterday saw some warmer temps. North facing terrain will be your best bet. With backbowls scheduled to open, they will be a great bet. Please bring proper equipment and the buddy system with you up there. Most places in the US, the avalanche deaths come from days that aren't considered to be the most dangerous. This is because complacency sets in and we get a bit more confident in making riskier decisions.

Niseko Avalanche Report Reads:

Niseko base 6am: -6℃, 5cm of crystal snow since predawn. Intermittent snowfall is forecasted until noon.
Coastal data: WNW11m/s at Benkei cape, 0.8m waves and 1021hPa.
Annupuri peak wind: NW9.8m/s.
No notable snowdrift development can be observed below 800m, however some are slowly developing in leeward slopes above 1000m. 20cm of newly formed slabs is present above Jan 7th layer and will keep growing today.
Yesterday’s sunshine helped crust to form in sun-exposed areas; layers of hoar are present in some places.
Shallow surface slab avalanches are still to be highly considered in areas within coordinate C4F4F7.
Avoid dropping into the same slope all at once; ride one by one.
Do not traverse under cornices; ski down the fall-line.
Make sure you are well prepared for any circumstances before riding highly hazardous terrains, such as the Backbowl’s sidewalls.
All gates are scheduled to open at 9:30am.
Get informed before stepping out and always use gates to access the out of bounds areas.
Do not duck ropes for any reasons.
Respecting the Niseko Rules is the only way to keep the freedom to go out.
