When Springsteen wrote Glory Days he was obviously thinking of Niseko on days like today. The snow has just kept on falling and since last report we've had up around another 35-40cm with heavy snowfalls continuing all this morning and it is still snowing. The top lifts are still closed and some others are on reduced speed due to the wind but the snow is deep everywhere, no need to get up high in the wind at all.
Snowfalls are expected to continue right through to next weekend so conditions are going to remain epic for awhile yet. Avi danger is extreme out there but they have opened gate 1 into Annupuri bowl and gate 6 at Moiwa. More gates will open once the avalanche danger subsides.
I spent the morning at Hanazono and had fresh tracks in Bluberries and Strawberries every run. I think the higher lifts in Hirafu took awhile to get open and people couldn't get over to Hanazono until around 10:30 leaving these great little bowls untouched except by the lucky few of us who started the day there.
Yep, glory days!!

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 290
Bottom - 160

Niseko Village:
Top - 190
Bottom - 140

Top - 180
Bottom - 150

Avalanche Information:

Annupuri 800m at 6am: -13℃ and 25cm of overnight snowfall.
Strong west to northwesterly gusts (20+m/s) with heavy snowfall is persisting above 1000m.
Unstable cornices are growing bigger in leeward ridgeline and snowdrifts have reached up to 2m in some steep slopes in the past 60 hours.
Avalanche risk is extreme.
Even if the weather calms down a bit today, extreme danger level will last all day in leeward steep slopes above 800m, such as upper-Mikaeri, Backbowl, SE face of Osawa and around cornices or Higashi-One.
The risk is too high, do not duck ropes or nets and venture out.
Carefully choose your route even in lower altitudes (<800m), it would be wiser to stay away from wide-open steep faces and cornice slopes.
All gates will be kept closed except for gate 1 and 6, which opening will depend on lift operations and weather conditions. Ride safe!
