Good morning all.

After a windy day with the wind affecting some lifts and snow falling on the mountain yesterday, there's no fresh to report at base this morning and it is noticeably not as cold. The wind shouldn't be an issue this morning which means we should have full access to the mountain.

Lots of cloud around but some breaks in the cloud in places and some sunshine too; we will probably see more of that as the morning progresses.

We can perhaps expect that to continue into tomorrow, and while there is a chance of some fresh snow overnight I wouldn't expect anything significant. (I would be happy to be wrong there, of course!)

There's more sunshine on the forecast for later in the week so it is looking likely that we might have to play with what we got for at least the next few days which is pretty good, though fresh refills are always required to fill in tracks.
More excite news is to hear that gates 4 and 5 are apparently going to be opening today. Hurray!

Should be a good day. Take care and have fun, and I will see you tomorrow.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain Base 6.00am: -5°, no new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -5.2°, 2.8m/s 50 deg, snowdrift development. Mikaeri 800m: N10m/s, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1000m: 11.4m/s 356 deg, -7.8°. Hanazono 720m: -5.1°, 5.3m/s 337 deg. Annupuri 1000m: snowdepth 140cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NE6m/s. Kamui Cape ESE2m/s, 1028hPa, wave 1.6m.

Above 1000m a strong wind blew until dawn, the north side is covered with a wind crust and the south side has snowdrift development. Snowdrift development has generally stabilised, however above 800m on knolls and cornice slopes the risk of 60cm surface fractures continues through the morning. The snow is a bit wind pack and heavy. The snow in the trees is good.

Gates 4 and 5 are expected to open today. Please listen to the patrols advice before going out of bounds. Be careful on your return route, at lower elevations it is easy to get caught in bushy terrain. Be careful falling into creeks, there is still a lot of cold water in them. The poor snow conditions are making accident rescues difficult. Make cautious choices. Recommended to carry beacon, probe, shovel and wear a helmet.

Is your beacon switched on? Is today the day you will you need it? Have a good day.
