Good morning and it is the first day of the long weekend (Monday is a holiday here).

So what do we have going on this morning?

Just a dusting on the car this morning with no fresh cm of snowfall I'm afraid - as expected of course, but if we keep an eye on that forecast we can still see snow lined up from Monday night along with a real dip in temperatures as well. It looks promising. Yey!

For now though as I said yesterday we need to play with what we got and it looks like a nice morning for it too. At the moment there's a mix of cloud and blue sky with clear skies forecast for tomorrow as well.

Those special early morning operations I mentioned in the report yesterday went ahead today though by the time I post this it'll be 'normal daytime' operations about to begin.

It is going to be a busy weekend out there and everywhere should be open as planned. Have fun!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -5℃, no snowfall. Moiwa850m:-8℃, little snow and small development of snowdrift. Annupuri1150m: -9℃, NW15m/s, light snowfall. Hirafu1200m: -10℃, NW5m/s, scarce snowfall and snowdrifts. Kamui cape lighthouse: SW11m/s, 1016hPa, 1.1m waves.

A moving High-pressure system is bringing some wind but no snow. The snowdrifts and cornices around 850m elevation have stabilized. Although a weak layer (Jan 1st) can be observed at about 100cm depth and breaks with snowcat pressure, the general avalanche risk is low.

Cornices at 1100m elevation are likely to collapse, do not stand on top and do not traverse under them. Cornices are signs of avalanche terrain, make a habit staying away from them, traversing under them is foolish and dangerous.

The snowpack is still shallow. Around 90cm at 600m elevation, beware of tree stumps and falling into streams.

Unexpected dry season for Niseko.

Do not deny the Niseko Rules with selfish interpretation. The use of resort’s premises and freedom of out of bounds riding is only guaranteed to those, including guides, who respect the Niseko Rules. Accidents occur when conditions allows, and we try to keep it minimal with the Rules. It is foolish to deny the Rules with borrowed and/or half-baked wisdom.

Good snow is where you find it. Have a nice day.
