Good morning from Niseko.

It was a beauty of a day yesterday.

The main difference this morning is that it is a cloudy start to the day. And, we might even get a little snowfall. Apparently there are stronger winds higher up but as far as I can tell lifts will be opening as planned.

Sunshine is forecast for tomorrow again so whatever falls today should be short-lived.

In totally non-snow news:

From 6:30-8:30pm on Saturday (9th), the 'Kendama Jam' performance/lesson (it says here) will be held at the Mountain Center, Hirafu. I just consulted with Wikipedia and this is what they kindly told me about kendama:

"The kendama (けん玉, "sword [and] ball") is a traditional Japanese skill toy. The ken has three cups and a spike which fits into the hole in the ball. The kendama is a variant of the classic cup-and-ball game, and the Hispanic world toy known as boliche or balero. The principle of these toys are the same: catching one object with another, where both are joined by a string. However the modern kendama style takes influences from a diverse range of skills including yo-yo, diabolo, and juggling."

So now you know. Apparently there will be some 'experts' to watch. I like the sound of the 'jam' bit. Perhaps we can spread it on our toast once the event is finished.

Anyway, it's free so it might be a bit of fun. I just thought I would mention it.

PLEASE NOTE:

Some of the Now daily reports will appear later than usual on Thursday 7th March - it may even get to be the end of the day, but they will eventually appear! This is due to some important server/security maintenance work that we need to see to. Apologies in advance for any delays.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Mountain base 6am: -1℃, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -1.4℃, SSW3.47m/s, no snowfall. Mikaeri Cat track groomed today. Annupuri 1120m: 250cm snow depth, 1100m: -4.4℃, WSW7.6m/s. Hirafu peak: -6℃, 1000m: -3.6℃, SSE3.6m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: no new snow, -2.86℃, WSW6.4m/s, 136cm snow depth at the base. Kutchan weather station: -0.5℃, ESE2.2m/s. Benkei cape: WSW4m/s, Kamui cape: SSW17m/s, 1013hPa, 1.4m waves.

Warm air flow due to passing low-pressure. The wind is strong in higher elevation and some snowfall is expected above 800m in the afternoon. Snowdrifts are expected to develop as well and if the deposit amount becomes big, the avalanche risk will rise accordingly. Please pay attention to the weather transition.

The mountain is shifting to spring. Thaw is swelling the streams and snow bridges are likely to collapse. Stay away from valley bottoms and/or under steep slopes to avoid glide avalanches. The light weak and the snow surface is difficult to see.

Have a nice day.
