This is the Japan you see in all the movies. Over the past 2 days we have seen a good amount of snowfall (~60cm). It's been pretty busy around Niseko so keeping up with the snow is a difficult one when it falls like this. We expect to see snowfall today and tonight and have it taper off by tomorrow. Winds are expected to die down today as well. Yesterday they reached gusts of 60km/hr in places around Niseko and affected lift operations pretty badly.

Keep in mind there has been some major windloading activity. Anything on the North/Northeat/Northwest aspect will see windslab activity. This means the higher you go, the more likely for a bigger slab. You will see slabbing activity on these aspects at elevation and I would advise to stay out of the backcountry at least for a day or two. The poor visibility and heavy windload will considerably affect backcountry travel. One last thing to consider is the weight of the snow that fell yesterday. It was very heavy on top of a very light layer. This, generally, creates a good slipping layer as it compresses.

With that said, there's plenty of epic fresh on-piste snow. Resorts like Rusutsu, Niseko, and Kokusai are seeing heavy snowfall as well and weren't open 100% yesterday to get tracked out. Pick out a resort and go have an awesome day of powder skiing!

Niseko avalanche report reads:

Niseko base 6am: -1℃, 50cm of broken particle & hail snowfall between 6pm and midnight yesterday, 10cm of crystal snow between midnight and 6am. Coastal data: WNW18m/s at Benkei cape, 3.2m waves 1013hPa at Kamui cape. Strong wind and heavy snowfall have persisted for 24hours above 800m altitude, snowdrifts and cornices have developed drastically. The general avalanche risk is VERY HIGH today, and eEXTREME in areas with open steep slopes with heavy snowdrifts accumulation, namely Moiwa/Mikaeri area(C4G5), O-sawa/Backbowl area (F4F7E7E4) and Higashi-One area (H7H9G9G7). Today’s development of snowdrifts is irregular and avalanches can be triggered by stimulating weak lines within those snowdrifts (up to 150cm thick in some spots). Although the deeper snowpack above Jan 1st layer is starting to stabilize, snowdrifts development in the past 24hours is drastic and possibilities of a 1m thick surface slab avalanche is to be highly considered. The storm is seen to temporarily calm down and pick up again soon. All gates above 800m altitude will be closed. Do not duck ropes to seek fresh tracks. The mountain is in extreme condition today.
