Bit of a buzz around town this morning with the first decent snow to settle on Mt Youtei gleaming brightly in the morning sunshine. It's only settled on the top 100m or so but it's always exciting when the white stuff makes it's first appearance each season.

After the cool, wet and cloudy summer September ended up having some great weather with day after day of clear weather. It actually ended up being the driest September on record in Kutchan. The clear weather meant cool nights and mild days and overall the average temperature was only just below normal.
Currently there is a large complex low pressure system situated in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk directing some cool westerly winds over Hokkaido with occasional showers which have been falling as snow over the higher peaks on the island. The cooler weather looks set to continue through much of the coming week although there is little precipitation forecast.

JMA released their winter forecast recently and they are not overly optimistic about the chances of colder and snowier winter than normal although it's still a long way out and the forecast can change and they certainly don't always get it right. They did for instance forecast a warmer than average September but it ended up being cooler throughout much of the country.

Anyway in a normal year we can expect the first sub zero overnight temperatures here by about the middle of this month and the first snowfalls to village level during the 2nd week of November.
