Good morning from Niseko.

This morning I have news of a very exciting giveaway on SnowJapan that many readers of Niseko Now will surely be interested in. One lucky person (plus two friends) is going to be winning and enjoying a full day private tour here in Niseko (courtesy of Hanazono Powder Guides). For more information and how you can enter, please check out the SnowJapan Facebook page here:

Yes, I am jolly well interested in winning a fabulous prize!

So on to my morning report.

I'm afraid there's no new snowfall to report this morning. Good job I had that exciting news to report above!

We were expecting something overnight but it obviously wasn't to be with the snow clouds apparently taking a more northerly route. Which is just silly isn't it. Anyway, it is just a cloudy and overcast kind of morning here. Without new fresh I would expect the groomers to be a good choice this morning. And check below for gate information if that is what you are interested in.

It is a bit colder this morning and it does feel pretty chilly outside. I was as surprised (or is that shocked) as anyone to see the top news yesterday in Japan... many regions of the country were basking in temperatures that were typical of March and April rather than early January. Luckily for us up here, Hokkaido seems to be mostly escaping this weather madness and we can only hope that continues. And of course I hope that things pick up for our friends further south on Honshu as well.

The forecast for us here in Niseko is still looking very good for lots of regular snowfall over the coming week. If the forecast is right it should be pretty consistent and temperatures should remain low. That's what we like.

Have a fun day wherever you may be.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -5℃, no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -8℃, no snowfall. Annupuri 1150m: W8m/s, no snowfall, light development of snowdrifts, calm. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW12m/s, Kamui cape W9m/s, 1013hPa, 1.8m waves.

Calm morning without new snow. The general avalanche risk is low under 1100m elevation, however surface slab avalanche, potentially 80cm thickness, from Dec 22nd layer is likely to occur in Kozan no sawa (Backbowl) sidewalls around 1200m altitude. Stimulating cornices and knolls could trigger a slide that would chain-react into a larger avalanche. Better not carelessly drop into those slopes. Do not traverse under cornices, even in lower altitude. These are all time danger zones. Have you turned your beacon on? Carrying one may not be mandatory, but could save yours or someone else’s life.

The groomers are in great condition. Gate 3 (Hirafu peak) and 11 (Muzuno no sawa) are scheduled to open today. Listen to the ski patrol’s instructions before stepping out. Hiking up to the peak is only allowed when gate 3 is open, please be aware that walking up from gate 4 is restricted. Gate 4 will be closed until noon today. Gate 6 and 10 will be open. Be careful picking your touring route. The Mikaeri cat-track is yet to open.
Have a nice day.
