After riding Kokusai with over 25cm of fresh in some areas, the month of January is beginning to look really good. The wind wasn't quite as strong as in Niseko (gusts up to 80km per hour) and the snow had fallen a bit more.

Niseko should be awesome today. A snowfall of 10-15 cm around the Niseko area resorts will bring a fun day to all. The backbowls will be great today with the wind depositied snow that we got yesterday. Please keep in mind wind loaded snow is easier to slide, especially on the warm temperature layer from a few days ago.

If you decide to venture out into the side/backcountry please do so with a partner and the proper equipment. As a friend of ours knows, it can be pretty expensive to be rescued in that zone.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu / Hanazono:
Top - 280cm
Bottom - 140cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 260cm
Bottom - 170cm

Top - 265cm
Bottom - 170cm

Niseko Avalanche Report Reads:

Niseko base 6am: -6C; and 15cm of crystal snow in the past 12 hours.
Coastal data: NW10m/s at Benkei cape, 2.3m waves and 1005hPa at Kamui cape.
Annupuri peak wind: NW8.9m/s.
No snowdrifts development can be observed at the base, however 35cm of fresh snow has blanketed the tree-runs since 1pm yesterday.
Intermittent & moderate NW wind & snow has continued above 800m altitude, making snowdrifts and cornices developing slowly.
A 50cm thick (from 1/1 layer) surface slab avalanche hazard is to be highly considered in leeward steep slopes around 800-1100m altitude.
Potentially dangerous slopes are SE facing slopes of O-sawa and the Backbowl (north of coordinate F5&F6), cornice slopes of Higashi-One (between G7 & H8).
Beware of typical avalanche terrain features: knolls and cornices.
Riding the bottom of any large valleys is also to be avoided; avalanches run through the fall line.
Gates are scheduled to open at 9:30am. Ask the patrol’s advice before stepping out of the gates.
The area and the resorts will not take responsibilities for any accidents happening in the out of bounds areas, however are deeply concerned about all visitors’ safety and respect everyone’s freedom and will to go out of the resort boundaries.
Overall good snow conditions today.

Noon update:

It's coming down pretty good right now. Looks like tonight might be a good one to check out Hirafu night skiing. The snow density is super light and right now is your stereotypical Hokkaido pow!
