Well it's not exactly turned out to be the summer we were all hoping for this year. We in Hokkaido really appreciate our summers after our very long and cold winters. At the end of May it was looking promising with temperatures somewhat unseasonably getting up into the high 20's. The first week of June wasn't too bad but then for much of the rest of the month it was cloudy with frequent light rain. July continued very cloudy and the rain got heavier dropping 150mm in Kutchan. June was equal 2nd cloudiest on record and July was the 3rd cloudiest on record.
The last of the visible snow drifts on Youtei dissapeared in the last couple of weeks and everything is now a very vibrant and lush green. Hirafu has been much quieter this summer with only a few construction projects going ahead after the economic crisis shut the floodgates of foreign investment into the village. I'm sure those living up here year round won't have been unhappy about that.
Over the last couple of weeks we've seen the International Music Festival and Kutchan's biggest annual event, the Jaga Matsuri (potato festival). Somewhat suprisingly there were actually very few potatoes to be found at the festival but the weather was fine for the street parade and it seemed most of the local residents turned out for the festivities.
Still to come is Niseko Cycle Week which has events for all standards in road racing and mountain biking. Already a few broken bones just from people practising so the events themselves should be fun to watch.
Anyway we're all hoping for a break from the rain and to see the sun again so we can get out and really enjoy all the outdoor activities possible in the region.
