Good morning everyone.

We enjoyed lots of blue sky yesterday with more cloud around in the afternoon. This morning we start the day with mostly cloudy skies. More of a chance of sun tomorrow along with slightly warmer conditions with low positive number temperatures.

A moderate wind is likely higher up today but it shouldn't affect lifts, all of which are opening as planned at the start of the day.

Here we are in the first weekend of March.

It always kind of feels safer to mutter the 'spring' word once we actually get into March. Taking a quick look at the forecasts for the coming week, there's really not much on there that gives us real hope of decent snowfall, so we have to enjoy what we have and hold out for some fresh beyond that. I find it hard to accept that we won't have another delivery of snow this season. That just seems... wrong.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Mountain base 6am: -2℃, no snowfall. Moiwa800m: -5.3℃, NNW5.76m/s, light development of snowdrifts and cornices. Annupuri1120m: snow depth 250cm, 1100m: -8.7℃, W4.90m/s. Hirafu peak: -8℃, 1000m: -8.4℃, NNE3.70m/s, no snowfall. Mizuno no Sawa: -6.64℃, WNW5.5m/s, no snowfall, 144cm snow depth at the base. Kutchan weather station: -0.8℃, W2.3m/s, 143cm snow depth. Benkei cape: NNW10m/s, Kamui cape: NW7m/s, 1014hPa, 2.0m waves.

The isobars spacing got tight and the wind in high elevation is moderately strong. There were no snowfall, however the temperature remains low and the snow hasn’t started melting above 700m elevation. Loose snow slides are to be expected in gullies and slopes under chair-lifts below 600m elevation as the temperature rises during the day. Some wind-blown snow deposit is present above 800m elevation, however is shallow and firm right underneath. Beware of old tracks. The general avalanche risk is low and all gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Be well prepared and ask the ski patrol some advice before stepping out of the gates. Always be vigilant in valley bottoms and cornice slopes. Cracks are opening and are difficult to notice from above. Be humble and cautious in the mountains. Pray for some new snow.

Have a nice weekend.
