Good morning.

We start the month of February with no fresh snowfall on the ground for me to report.

It is keeping relatively mild this morning. It might be icy and rather windy still and, well, probably less than ideal this morning. (See how diplomatic I am?)

The forecasts are looking good and positive, especially from Monday onwards so we can look forward to regular fresh snow soon and a return to colder temperatures.

-----

As of 8:30am, wind is affecting the Niseko Annupuri Gondola and top Jumbo lift as well as the top lift at Niseko Village. Other lifts appear to be scheduled to open as normal. Keep an eye on that!

-----

My monthly recap will be posted in the report on Monday.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain base: -3℃, strong gusts, no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: E 84°5.7m/s, -6.2℃. Yu no sawa 1000m: -8.5℃, wind data n/a. Village 900m: NNE 13°2.1m/s, -7.7℃. Hirafu 1000m: NNW353°9.4m/s, -8.6℃. Hanazono 720m: NNW342°4.6m/s, -6.4℃. Benkei cape: E7m/s, Kamui cape: E3m/s, 1013hPa, 3.0m waves. Annupuri1000m snow depth: 160cm.

The strong 974hPa low-pressure system has moved to the pacific, however E-NE wind remains strong. There is no snowfall but windblown snow is accumulating at SW aspects of gully terrain above 750m. Those snowdrifts are just starting to stabilize as the wind settled down, however they were still very unstable and collapsing with the slightest stimulation at 5am. It is highly recommended to avoid SW facing knolls above 800m as well as 30+°slopes with heavy deposit of new dense-snow slabs. Avalanche hazard level is still high at the Back Bowl (Kozan no sawa). All gates are scheduled to open, however be mindful of the risk you’re taking. Listen to the ski patrol’s instructions at the gates. Conditions are quite foul in the out of bounds.

Gates 2 & 3 closes at 2pm. Gate 6 at 3pm. Don’t go out of the gates in the late afternoon. Search and rescue becomes very difficult after sunset and all out of bounds rescue will cost a minimum of ¥100,000. Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended. Have you switched you beacon on?? The groomer conditions are bad today. Have a nice day.
