It is a fantastic bluebird morning in Niseko!

The day started a bit cold and windy, indeed the temperature has dropped a few degrees overnight but as the morning progressed the wind died down and after the light snow shower finished earlier on the sun came out.

Maybe not a day for the powderhounds but a great one for photos and topping up the tan.

The forecast is looking quite promising for this week though with snowfall due Tuesday onwards.

Nighta at Niseko Grand Hirafu has now finished for the season (last night) meaning that there is now no nighta operating in Niseko. Until next year!

Here's the official JMA snowfall info update for the month of March 2012. The final snowfall number for Kutchan town for March 2012 was 79cm, bringing the total for the 11/12 season to 1016cm. That compares with 1035cm from last season, so just a bit more and we'll beat the total for last season. Last season the month of April 2011 saw 24cm and while that isn't much, April isn't known for bringing huge snowfalls. Looking good for this week though so fingers crossed we will see some decent numbers this month. As always, worth mentioning that these numbers are for Kutchan town and not on the mountains, which will get more.

Snow depths:

Grand Hirafu / Hanazono:
Top - 400cm
Bottom - 175cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 440cm
Bottom - 190cm

Top - 470cm
Bottom - 180cm

Niseko Avalanche Report:

[This is the last Avalance report of the 11/12 season. Our thanks to the Niseko Avalanche Institute]

Niseko base 6am: -3C, 5cm of broken particles snow in the past 12 hours. Coastal data: Nw10m/s at Benkei cape, 2.3m and 1007hPa at Kamui cape. Annupuri peak:NW15.5m/s, -12.4C. Annupuri 1000m: 470cm snowdepth.
Snowfall transition: Cold air flew in once the warm air-mass passed and the front moved east. The surface is crusty above 800m and snowdrifts developed in leeward slopes. The development is relatively sudden and is unstable in the morning.
Hazard evaluation: The newly formed snowdrift slopes are unstable and are likely to slide from March 30th layer. Potential thickness is 40cm and are powerful enough to involve a serious accident. A small slide could trigger a larger scale avalanche. Caution is required in coordinates: E6 Backbowl, F5 Osawa and east of G8 Higashione. Similar hazard is present in coordinate F6 West face.
Risks of large-scale spring climax slides are rising. It is strongly recommended to avoid riding valley bottoms and gullies to avoid critical accidents. Do not underestimate the dangers.
Gates: Peak gates are scheduled to open at 10am. Ask for the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out of the gates. April powder conditions. The snow in the trees is good. This avalanche info report will end today.
Enjoy riding the spring snow.
Have a safe end of the season.
