Pre-season report number two, from a slightly white but sunny Myoko.

We had what was actually our second snowfall of the season last night; the first caught us all by surprise, including the town, which failed to mark the road with red-and-white rods. This is not a small thing, as you won't be able to see where the road is a lot of times--I do the same thing around the house with 6-meter bamboo poles; if they aren't there I run over things with my monster snowthrower.

Not much of a snowfall, really; the first earlier in the month was probably 50 cm, but I didn’t bother to elaborate too much because you’d all just get too excited, and we knew it would all melt away (after pulling down tree branches, since it’s so heavy). Maybe 5cm last night, but it's sunny and nice today, so not really getting us in the ski mood. Well, the runs are white, but we know that if you did go up there and try to slide that early fresh snow would just stick to your skis, and you might just leave two brown lines down the slope (if you could actually move).

Not much new going on, except the ongoing invasion of foreign entities. Just remind people that it’s not that great here, the food is terrible and the snow is deep but essentially concrete (we can share this because, as a reader of Snow Japan, you are clearly of an entirely different class and deserve to come here and enjoy the fun with the locals. Just don’t tell anybody else).

More to come, as things happen.

Akakura Kanko Ski Area is scheduled to open on December 20, Suginohara on December 21st, Akakura Onsen Ski Area and Ikenotaira on the 14th.
