Welcome to April, or, at least, that's what it felt and looked like yesterday with warm, dry winds eating away at the snowpack.

It's what we'd expect to see in late March or into April, but not during January.

I'm not a meteorologist (although I sometimes play one on this site), but I think we were seeing Foehn winds, or something very similar - dry, warm winds on the lee side of mountains. It was snowing to the south of here, in places like Matsumoto; we were getting clear skies, strong winds, and we could watch the humidity drop through the day. It's what keeps Sasagamine, a big open plateau just behind Mt. Myoko, clear and pleasant on summer days when it's foggy and gray (even rainy) on the east side. But the main point here is that these winds (Foehn or not) really eat up the snow, and we really saw a drop in the snowpack.

Lots of closures yesterday due to wind. Lots of lifts not yet announced for today; lots of brown starting to show out there. Kurohime is again closed.

----

If you did not read the general message from SnowJapan that was in the report yesterday, please do take a few moments to check it out.

You can find it in the report from yesterday or here.
