It's gray and the barometer is falling... This is a day that just feels like snow is coming. The forecast isn't changing, either, with some heavy snow very possible in the coming days.

And as we're talking about snow, and we're at the very start of the season, I wanted to talk about snow depths, measurements and motivations. I heard from the good people who actually provide this information-rich website that there have been complaints: the guy in Myoko overstates snowfall; why are you bashing XYZ resort; of course they're overstating there because they must have a hotel/a ski school/some reason for saying there's more snow than really fell.

Let me get this out of the way: we Now! reporters are anonymous, and that's a good thing. But I will tell you that the daily snow measurements here in Myoko are done in a study plot in accordance with the major avalanche organizations of the world (most specifically Canada). People use this information for such things as assessing snow safety - if a meter of snow has fallen overnight, our readers need to know that before they head up the hill, especially when going outside the resorts. If it's sunny on a little bit of new snow, that's also important (and the wind, and the fog, and everything else we provide). I personally don't gain anything by reporting anything other than what I find here at the base of Akakan, or by changing the official reports from the ski areas.

The other thing - and it's something that is actually very interesting - is the difference in snowfalls in the resorts around Mt. Myoko. Lotte Arai, for example, is lower than Akakan, but it's really a frontline mountain, and although it has higher temperatures it does have greater snow depth. Same for Seki Onsen, just because of its unique location. Kurohime is just across the river from Suginohara, but the snow depth is much lower; just look at the official figures. Doesn't mean they have bad snow, though, just that like this year, they started a little later (and Suginohara has lower snow than Ikenotaira which is lower than Akakan....). The mountains on the east side of the area are also outside of Mt. Myoko's "snow shadow," so Tangram and Madarao have lower depths. But they have a lot of snow! It's good snow! We have great resorts for all kinds of people! I look at this as one big resort. We all win that way.

Sorry, a long talk here. But it is important: I do these reports because I know a lot of people access SnowJapan, and that the people who run it put a lot of energy into making sure our reports are accurate and timely. So I try to be as accurate in my snow measurements as possible; other than that, we have to trust the resorts to be accurate in their reporting.

And so I'm getting late in getting this out. Keep tuned for some big snow depth numbers in the coming days - all accurately probed and reported for your pleasure and safety.
