It's a great day in Myoko! The day started with pure blue skies, went to some snow (that keeps on going) and is staying unusually cold for this time of year. There is no reason that the resorts should be closing (except for the calendar, and I guess the issue of whether people will come or not).

Perfectly great powder skiing in the backcountry today, too. I thought it might be a cosmic April Fool joke: "No, it's actually February!" Genuine, soft, slightly heavy but easy-skiing, 15cm or so powder snow. NOT April snow at all. Spring skiing, for the adventurous, wil be outstanding (and thank you, Akakan and Ikenotaira, for getting us at least partway up the mountain).

No more official snow reports from the town, mostly because of a realignment of the Tourist Office that has a lot of people scratching their heads (like no regular employees.... How is that going to work out in a town—or this part of the newly consolidated town—that lives on tourism?). I'll summarize what I found out from elsewhere, though, on the situation from tomorrow:

Akakura Onsen: Kumado section lifts open April 2 to 8
Akakan: Sky Cable Gondola and Nos. 1 and 3 lifts will keep on running
Ikenotaira: Shirakaba Capsule, Ikenotaira Quad and AB Dai 1 lifts, until April 8
Suginohara: Closed
Seki Onsen: You can't stop with 580cm of snow on the ground (open through May)
Myoko Ski Park: Closed
Kyukamura: At least open for kids' sledding (lifts unclear)
Tangram: Closed
Madarao: Closed
