The sun is shining again today. Once again the heavy snow earlier predicted for the coming days keeps moving back, and back, and back....

No doubt about it, this is a year for the records. It is pretty out there, and there is plenty of snow at the resorts, so most of us have resigned ourselves to a winter where we don't have to spend a fortune firing up the monster snowthrowers and bulldozers that are our usual winter companions. No snow walls, so people don't wander up to the house looking for one of the local hotels. Maybe it'll come, but it will keep on snowing, even bit by bit, so winter still is good—even with the lowest snow that most anyone can remember. Take a walk in the woods and startle a yamadori (golden pheasant) like I did yesterday. Kind of makes it all OK.
