Good morning to all you fellow winter mountain pilgrims. The sky is clear, and the snow is sparkling. The forecast is for a clear sky today. Valley bottom temperatures are forecast to range from -2C to 7C. The same forecast calls for light winds from the south-west with nil precipitation.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Few clouds
Temperature: Present: -5.0 C
Maximum: 6.5 C
Minimum: -6.0 C
Wind: Light north-west
Winds aloft: Light north-west
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 924 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 81 cm
Foot penetration: 23 cm
Surface: Decomposed and faceting, size 2.5 mm
Density of surface snow: ~
Crust: 2 cm
Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

N.B. The buried surface hoar is now even more deeply buried. Historically light to moderate skiing of terrain has proved to have little to moderate effect on controlling a buried surface hoar instability.

Travel Advisory:
Remember the surface hoar mentioned above.
Several point release avalanches from size one to slightly larger (enough to carry you somewhere but probably not bury a person unless it was to pile up in a particularly nasty terrain trap (e.g. bank of a creek falling into a narrow gulch... gulp). Generally the stability is increasing with a special note to keep thinking reactive buried surface hoar in protected pockets. we have decided to keep the hazard rating at "Moderate" below tree line because with the day-time warming this zone will be most affected by the forecast warming (yesterday the temperature maximum in the shade was 6.5C). So watch the temperature and the terrain features.
