Good morning all you skiers and boarders excited to get out in to all those freshies. It snowed another 3 cms overnight to bring the base up just a little bit more. The mountains are peeking through this morning, looking like the clouds will dissipate and leave us with a fine bluebird day to enjoy the fresh powder and soft groomed runs. The temperatures were chilly this morning with -2.5 in the valley and -4.5 at 1500 m a.s.l. Winds are calm and things should warm up through the day making the snow on solar aspects a bit heavy. Northerly aspects will stay cool and will make for the best on resort riding.

The forecast is for partialy cloudy skies today and clear tomorrow as this next high pressure rolls through. But this clear weather should only be a fleeting window in the storm to come as there are multiple low pressure systems coming in from the north west sure to bring more great powder with them.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds (50% or more but less than 100% cloud cover)
Temperature: Present: -2.6 C
Maximum: 3.5 C
Minimum: -4.0 C
Wind: Calm - light Northerly
Winds aloft: Light Northerly
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 920 hPa and rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 3 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 90 cm
Foot penetration: 40 cm
Surface: New snow, size 4 mm
Density of surface snow: ~

Above Tree Line: High

At Tree Line: Considerable

Below Tree Line: Moderate

N.B. Trained "avalanche observers" heard the sound of larger avalanches 2 days ago with the new snow. Some slab avalanches were observed on Easdt and South East aspects yesterday. The buried surface hoar is now even more deeply buried. Historically light to moderate skiing of terrain has proved to have little to moderate effect on controlling a buried surface hoar instability.

Travel Advisory:
Another 3 cm snow accumulated in the valley (and more up high). With settlement there is approximately 30 cm of storm snow (height of storm snow: HST). This is compared with the two days' accumulated HN24 of 42 cm. With the FP (foot penetration) of 40 and more there is obviously lots of snow available for transportation. Winds are light at present but should change as this High presure system comes through and may continue to load lee slopes.

The recent snow is settling quickly, there has been little significant wind, the visibility is improving, the travel will be rather difficult and there are probably pockets of buried surface hoar lurking. Do take extra caution in steep tensioned terrain and be increasingly cautious with solar radiated slopes and warming temperatures.

Sweet Lines.
