This morning it is "Situation Normal: Snowing Hard". It has been snowing at a rate of 3 centimetres accumulation an hour since early this morning. At 0700 hrs. at the Hira Kawa Station there was 17 cm of new snow (HN). The forecast is for this to continue throughout the day with a bit of an increase in intensitity at mid-day. The visibility is very limited and the air is humid so spare pair of goggles would be a clever thing to bring along. The driving is a bit slick so feather those brakes long before the intersection. The wind was dead calm this morning in the valley floor. The Happo One Lift Company ski-patrol report that there is no wind at the top of their terrain and everything is in a cloud. It might be handy to ski beside the fence-lines and trees at the edges of the runs so as to have some reference in the fog.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Obscured (in fog)
Temperature: Present: 0.0 C
Maximum: 3.0 C
Minimum: -8.0 C
Wind: Calm
Winds aloft: not visible
Precipitation: S 3 (snowing at the rate of 3 cm per hour accumulation)
Barometer and trend: 913 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 17 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 81 cm
Foot penetration: 28 cm
Surface: rimed new snow, size 2.0 mm
Density of surface snow: 80 kg/cubic metre

Above Tree Line: High

At Tree Line: High

Below Tree Line: Considerable

N.B. The Happo One Lift Company ski-patrol reports no winds at the upper elevations of their terrain. Also there is poor visibility. The underlying snow is well faceted on the northerly aspects and sun and wind effected on the southerly aspects.

Travel Advisory:
With this 17 cm of HN and snowing hard in the valley things have changed from yesterday. The considered wisdom is that natural avalanches above tree line could be common but they probably won't tend to run too far. Still it will be smart to know what is above you, be it terrain or other parties (groups of 15 people have been observed often in the terrain above the Happo One Lift company terrain). Below this new snow is the faceted snow from the past cold, clear nights. Don't forget the buried surface hoar that is lurking in spots here and there.

The storm is forecast to increase in intensity around mid-day. If (when) the wind does pick-up there is lots of snow to move around and with the high humidity it should form slabs of various hardnesses readily.
