A beautiful blue bird Christmas day here in Hakuba. No snow over nightto make it white in the valley but the crystal clear views of the mountains today almost make up for that. There is no wind this morning and the visibility is excelent. Sharpen those edges get up top and carve the piste in the morning and carve the Turkey this afternoon.

Runs are hard packed and man made snow just keeps getting pumped out.

Have a Merry Christmas

Backcountry Advisory:
With limited upper level observations we are calling the "HAZARD" "Moderate".
Discussion: high winds yesterday had the Goryu Lift Company cease operation of their upper lifts. The wind was coming in light to moderate gusts in the Hime Kawa valley floor. The height of new snow (HN) observed at 0700 hrs. at 830 m a.s.l. (metres above sea level) was a trace (i.e. less than one centimetre). The height of snow on the ground (HS) at the same observation site (830 m a.s.l. in the Hira Kawa valley, right across fromn the Hakuba 47 lift base) was a trace. The air temperature (Ta) was -1C. This morning from the upper lift accessable terrain there were reports of light snow fall (S -1: snow falling so as to accumulate less than one centimetre an hour), high winds from the North-west ("high" winds usually mean more than 40 kilometres per hour and at this speed drifts will form. With the foot penetration (PF) of 40 cm observed three days ago at 1,700 m a.s.l. on a South-west forested exposure (Hiyodori Mine) there is plenty of snow available for transportation. I would suspect that soft slabs are forming at and above tree-line and maybe below, depending on the aspect. The temperature was reported as "not very cold". Wind chill is another bag of snakes altogether.
